Questions and Answers About Agua y Sol

Frequently asked questions

Do Agua y Sol shirts provide UPF 50 sun protection?

Yes. Agua y Sol shirts provide certified UPF 50 sun protection, helping protect the skin covered by the fabric from 98% of UVA and UVB rays. Our UPF protection comes from the fabric itself rather than a chemical UV treatment.

How long does UPF 50 protection last?

Agua y Sol's UPF protection is built into the fabric rather than applied as a temporary sunscreen-like treatment. With proper care, the shirt is designed to provide lasting sun protection.

However, UPF performance can be affected by fabric wear, stretching, and damage over time. Replace the shirt if the fabric becomes significantly worn or damaged.

Are the shirts treated with chemicals for UV protection?

No. Our UPF 50 protection comes from the fabric itself, rather than chemical UV treatment. The fabric's composition is naturally UV-resistant, and the mesh construction helps with quick drying and breathability while maintaining long-lasting sun protection.

Is your polyester fabric safe to wear?

Agua y Sol shirts are made with Lafayette's Hydrotech performance fabric. This 100% polyester fabric is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, meaning it has been tested against a broad range of potentially harmful substances according to OEKO-TEX requirements.

Do I still need sunscreen?

Agua y Sol shirts protect the skin covered by the fabric. You should take precautions for exposed skin, such as the face, neck, and legs.

We created Agua y Sol to make it easier to protect more of your skin from the sun while reducing the amount of sunscreen you need to use.

Are Agua y Sol long-sleeved shirts good for hot weather?

Yes. Our shirts are designed with premium fabric that is lightweight, quick-drying, and moisture-wicking, making them comfortable for warm-weather adventures or activities that cause you to sweat.

Can I swim in an Agua y Sol shirt?

Absolutely. Agua y Sol shirts are designed for life in and around the water. Wear them snorkeling, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply enjoying the day at the beach or pool.

They are quick-drying and made for movement so you don't have to change between your water adventures and the rest of your day.

Are they rashguards or everyday shirts?

Both. Agua y Sol combines the sun protection and performance of a rashguard with the relaxed look and feel of an everyday long-sleeve shirt.

Our wearable art is inspired by streetwear, so these are pieces you can wear beyond the beach or after your hike. Grab lunch and explore the city while staying protected from the sun. They are designed to be versatile, comfortable, and distinctive, and are sure to get a few compliments along the way.

How do they fit / which size should I order?

Agua y Sol shirts have a relaxed, casual fit designed for movement. For the best fit compare your measurements with our size guide.

If you're between sizes, your preferred fit can help determine which size is best for you. Choose the smaller size for a closer fit or a size up for an oversized and relaxed style.

How do I wash and care for my shirt?

The artwork is sublimation printed directly into the fabric, rather than applied as a surface graphic, helping it stay vibrant through repeated wear and washing.

To keep your shirt looking and performing its best:

  • Immediately rinse off saltwater or chlorine after use
  • Machine wash cold with like colors
  • Use mild detergent
  • Avoid fabric softener and bleach
  • Air dry or tumble dry on low
Where are the shirts made?

Our shirts are designed, printed, cut, and sewn in Mexico, using high-quality fabric sourced from Lafayette, a respected performance textile manufacturer from Colombia.

Where does the artwork come from?

Every Agua y Sol design begins with a story inspired by Mexico's oceans, lagoons, and wildlife.

We are committed to sourcing and collaborating with real artists who align with our mission. You can learn about our inaugural artists on our collections page.

How is Agua y Sol eco-friendly?

We believe protecting your skin and protecting the places you love to explore can go hand in hand.

Our UPF 50 shirts help reduce the need for sunscreen on covered skin, which is especially meaningful when you're swimming and exploring delicate aquatic environments where sunscreens can be harmful. Think freshwater cenotes and lagoons, and oceans with coral reefs.

We also use our designs to bring attention to threatened ecosystems and species throughout Mexico and are committed to collaborating with conservation organizations as we expand.

We don't claim to be a zero-impact brand but will always strive to source conscious partners. We believe in making more thoughtful choices, measuring your impact, and encouraging people to explore nature with greater care.
